Two wrestling coaches were fired for what school officials say was a lack of control.

Coaches Travis Reardon and Tom Meert were fired from Plainwell’s wrestling program after the district says it discovered some students had been wearing plastic to trap heat in, and lose weight quickly. That’s against the Michigan High-School Athletic Association rules.

District Superintendent Sue Wakefield says she doesn’t know whether the coaches were aware the plastics were being used, but they were still responsible for the athletes during practice.

Coaches Reardon and Meert guided James Brazier through high-school wrestling. “They were great coaches,” Brazier said, “I was pretty shocked.”

Brazier told Newschannel 3 that he never wore plastics at practice, but did at home. “I’d put them on, run, when parents were around, run 10-15 minutes, call it good.”

Brazier’s father Aaron, said “we were in the basement when he was on the treadmill, we knew where he was and were down there the whole time.”

Aaron Brazier said he doesn’t believe the couches knew the athletes were wearing plastics during school-sanctioned practice.

“Kids hid them well enough,” Aaron said. “They could conceal them. I believe Coach wouldn’t stopped it if they’d seen it.”

The district held a meeting Thursday night to hear concerns from parents. Newschannel 3 tried to contact the coaches, but they were not available.

The district is currently on probation.
