The perfect season ended in the most perfect way.
When Wausau West junior Jackson Hein won his 171-pound match by pin in 45 seconds over Kaukauna’s Marcus Driessen, it capped the Warriors’ journey to their first state championship and an undefeated season.
The top-ranked Warriors (22-0) defeated No. 2 Kakuauna (21-3) 33-27 for the Division 1 crown Saturday night at the WIAA State Team Championships at the UW-Fieldhouse.
“I went out there just trying to get the win and when the head throw was there I took it and stuck him,” Jackson Hein said. “To win a match like that for the state team title is pretty huge.”
His victory set of a wild celebration on the bench as well as the blue and gold clad fans in the West section of the bleachers.
It was also a special moment for coach Dan Hein and his other son on the team, 152-pound senior Joshua.
“Jackson’s win was so huge. Not everyone won tonight. We had some heartbreaking losses, but as a team we were perfect,” the Warriors coach said. “We had the perfect state tournament to end a perfect season.”
In addition to their unblemished dual meet record, the Warriors won all nine tournaments in which they competed this season.
The Warriors made a change to start the meet, moving Phil Larkin up from 189 to 215 pounds. The West senior scored a takedown 31 seconds into overtime to lead his team off with a 3-1 win over Kaukauna junior Matt Wallace.
“I knew I had to get the win anyway I could and I just gave it everything I had for our team,” Larkin said. “We got the momentum and everyone built on it and wrestled amazing.”
Kaukauna won at 285 pounds, but the Warriors won five of the next seven matches to lead 27-9 after the 140-pound match.
While all the matches were important, each team won seven each, a pin by Jason Kyle at 119 pounds was one of the pivotal weights. Kyle was trailing Matt Kilgas 8-6 when he earned a reversal and recorded a pin.
Each team had two pins, but the difference was West’s two wins by technical fall and two by major decisions.
“We battled an uphill after the overtime match to start it out,” said Kaukauna coach Jeff Matczak, whose team finished state runner-up for a third time. “We were never able to take a lead. We needed a win earlier in the match and we didn’t get it.”
In Division 2, Lodi beat defending champion Ellsworth 36-22 and Mineral Point routed Coleman 47-19 for the Division 3 title.
