ramos_tony Tony Ramos commits to University of IowaTony Ramos, a two-time Illinois state champion at Glenbard North High School, verbally committed to the Hawkeyes late Monday night, selecting Iowa over Oklahoma State, Illinois and Indiana.

“He has goals and dreams of being an Olympic and World champion, along with NCAA titles, and that’s where he felt, with the coaching staff, that’s where he could get it done,” Ramos’ brother, Frankie DeFilippis said. “He felt like that’s where he needed to be and that’s where he wanted to be.”

Ramos, projected to wrestle at 125 pounds in college, is ranked the No. 12 overall recruit nationally in the Class of 2009 by InterMat. He is the second high school senior to verbally commit to the Hawkeyes. West High’s Derek St. John, ranked seventh on InterMat’s list of college prospects, committed to Iowa in August.

Ramos adds Iowa’s stable of lightweights. The Hawkeyes signed the nation’s top-ranked 125-pounder last year when the inked West’s Nate Moore in a recruiting class that also included Linn-Mar’s Matt McDonough and Waverly-Shell Rock’s Mark Ballweg, also both highly-regarded prospects who project to wrestle at 133 or 141 in college. Iowa’s roster also includes juniors Joey Slaton, Dan LeClere and Daniel Dennis and freshman Montell Marion, all 133- or 141-pounders.

“Obviously, he thinks (Iowa’s depth is) going to make him better,” DeFilippis said. “He’s not afraid of competition, otherwise he wouldn’t have made that decision.
