State Representatives Pam Thornburg and Bill Carson read a tribute to the Smyrna High School wrestling team at the event.

“We applaud the wrestlers, coaches, cheerleaders, parents, volunteers, and all those who have contributed their time, energy and resources to initiate and maintain the success of the program,” they read. “Throughout the past 47 years, the team has brought enthusiasm, community support, sportsmanship, and the pursuit of excellence to young athletes. This ongoing legacy is a source of pride for the entire community.”

State champions and championship teams were recognized, and each of Smyrna’s past six varsity wrestling coaches said a few words, including current head coach Kurt Howell.

“As a coach, I really appreciate being a part of this tradition,” said Howell, the only of the six coaches who did not also wrestle for Smyrna.

Mike Dulin, who coached in the SHS wrestling program for 15 years, told the crowd, “I am so proud of all of our former wrestlers that have made the program come alive – not only the wrestlers but the cheerleaders, the parents, the managers.”

“It was awesome,” he continued. “I’ll never forget it. You’re the greatest.”

Buddy Lloyd, a former coach who also won a state championship as a wrestler for Smyrna, said, “It makes my heart swell to come back and stay involved.”

He then introduced former coach Ron Eby, crediting him with transforming a three-year-old wrestling program into the traditional powerhouse it is today.

“He took a bunch of farm guys and started teaching them techniques,” Lloyd said.

Eby said he has seen about 470 of Smyrna’s 500 wins.

“I hope I’m around to see a couple hundred more,” he said.

After the celebration, the Eagles wrestled Lake Forest, beating the Spartans 59-11 for their 503rd win.
