Wrestling team and coach accused of hazing

An ex-wrestling coach and nine teammates at a high school in Asheboro, N.C., have been accused of taking freshman hazing too far.

Nine students face charges of misdemeanor assault, while their former coach has been charged with aiding and abetting in the alleged assault of seven freshmen, WXII-TV in Greensboro, N.C., reported Monday.

“Some of the younger wrestlers (were) tied up (with) duct tape, (in) explicit positions or misconstrued to be that way anyway,” Police Chief Gary Mason said.

Police reportedly obtained cell phone pictures and video of the incident from a student.

None of the alleged victims were injured in the 72-hour hazing period, officials said.

“I came in (and) yelled stop and made all the upperclassmen run for 30 minutes. It went a little too far,” former team coach Dennis Johnston told reporters.

The school’s principal said in a statement several wrestlers were kicked off the team and they found a new coach, WXII-TV said.
