Never let it be said that all the U. cares about are football and basketball.

Last week, we sat in on a workout of Oak Park senior wrestler Marcel Dubose. Running up steps and then stretching, the 6-foot teenager worked up a sweat.

Competing in the 215-pound division, Dubose is on pace to garner his third straight individual state title next month. (He won his first two state titles at Highland Park).

He is 30-0 after sweeping through districts last weekend, and he will be in action Saturday at state regionals at Southgate Anderson.

He is a powerful athlete with cat-like agility, as evidenced by the backflip he did after winning a state title last season.

He paused from his workout to chat with the U.

Dubose told us that he has committed to wrestle at Michigan State next fall, but there’s one problem: He also wants to play football.

“I’m trying to see if I can find a school that will let me do both, and I’m getting positive response,” Dubose said.

Enter West Virginia.

He plans to visit the school and he thinks the Mountaineers will be receptive to him playing football. He was a standout linebacker at Highland Park, but he was only eligible to play the last game of the regular season for Oak Park because of his transfer.

He has until April 1 to sign a letter of intent. The sky is the limit for his wrestling abilities. He won the junior nationals in Greco-Roman last summer and is currently ranked 10th in the nation in Greco-Roman, according to themat.com.

And the Olympics are a stated goal for Dubose. But he just doesn’t want to give up football.

“That’s the glory sport,” Dubose said. “Sometimes, I get a little fed up with wrestling. I get a little tired of going out there and beating those guys. Sometimes they don’t give me comp. Out there on the field, I’m always getting competition.”

And if West Virginia lets him do both?

“If they let me wrestle and play football down there, that’s where I’ll be headed,” Dubose said.
