“It’s the best feeling in the world as of now,” he said. “Hopefully it gets better from here.”

Chiri will make his next move to Iowa in the fall. The three-time state place-winner who compiled a 180-14 record in high school said Thursday he will join the reigning NCAA champion Hawkeyes.

He said he also considered Augustana (S.D.), Morningside, Iowa State and Indiana before selecting Iowa and following the path of his friend Michael Fahrer, who walked on with the Hawkeyes after a prep career at New London.

“I’ve been working out with him, and he comes down once in a while and we wrestle around,” Chiri said. “It’s weird seeing how much better he’s gotten since he’s been in a (practice) room like that. His style has changed quite a bit.”

Chiri is believed to be the sixth member of Iowa’s incoming recruiting class and the fifth Iowan. The Hawkeyes signed West High stars Nate Moore and Grant Gambrall, Linn-Mar’s Matt McDonough and Waverly-Shell Rock’s Mark Ballweg in the fall and added Iowa Central’s Colby Covington in April.

Chiri placed fourth as a sophomore and third as a junior before winning the 152-pound title as a senior, blending unorthodox skills into a physical style.

“I like to try and beat people up when I can, but otherwise I’m really flexible and funky,” he said. “I can do the splits and weird stuff when I need to. I don’t like doing that stuff, but when it happens, it happens. … I want to go to Iowa so I get more of their style of beating people up.”
