“We are going to have wrestling in Cedaredge, so please celebrate,” superintendent Mike McMillan told a group of parents attending the Sept. 18 school board meeting. Although a coaching contract has been offered to Roy Brown, a teacher at Delta Middle School, rumors persist that the program has been axed.
One student pointed out that team members had been asked to sign a commitment form, to assure there would be enough participation to warrant continuation of the sport at CHS. “I’d like you guys to sign a commitment form,” he told school board members, prompting applause from several members of the audience.
A full squad is comprised of 13 wrestlers. Students were given the goal of lining up 12 to 15 participants. Although that goal had been met — and a schedule had even been handed out — rumors persisted that the program might be combined with Delta’s.
“This issue is confusing to me,” McMillan said. “The decision has been made to carry forth with the program. I’m pleased to announce a contract was issued to a varsity coach several weeks ago.”
That said, McMillan added that there is a point where programs with low numbers should be consolidated. “That’s not unique to Cedaredge,” he said.
But for now, the wrestling program has a coach, and there’s a possibility of adding an assistant if participation continues to climb. “Plus we always welcome volunteers,” McMillan said.
“We’re definitely back on track,” said Martin Peterson this week. Peterson expects to wrestle at the 112- or 119-pound level this year. “We’ve got about 12 guys who want to wrestle, and I think we’ll be tough,” he added.
