Three-time state champions David Taylor (112) of St. Paris (Ohio) Graham High, Alex Meade (152) of Camden Wyoming (Del.) Caesar Rodney High and Jason Welch (160) of Walnut Creek (Calif.) Las Lomas High are repeat selections to the 14-member First Team as the 23rd annual ASICS All-America Wrestling Team was announced today.

The ASICS All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible. ASICS is a title sponsor of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Fargo Junior National Championships and is a major benefactor of the sport at all levels.

Technique Session: Single Leg, Tree Top Finish

The tree top finish is one of the best low risk finishes for the single leg. This same finish can go by many names (high outside finish, foot sweep finish, etc.. take your pick), but the result is the same.

Once in on the single, pop the ankle under your armpit keeping control over your opponents foot. You should have it so tight that the only way he will get loose is if the shoe comes off. It has become more and more common to see athletes counter this move by doing this:

  • Single Dumps
    • Squat Back, circle.
  • Stand up escapes
    • Lead with back.
  • Duck-unders generally require a step back to circle behind for takedown

kedit Principles on the Feet: Principles of Head PositionThe five basic principles of Head Position:

  • Use a solid, low stance with head pressure for set-up and defense
  • Use power penetrations to the center of your opponent for doubles, singles, high-crotches, etc
  • Keep tight side pressure for head outside singles
  • When your head is trapped you must work to keep the hips free and moving.
    • This is essential for low singles/doubles, and countering front headlocks.
  • Where the head goes, the body follows.
    • This is essential when dealing with sag headlocks and for maintain balance in general.
