The Alton Brothers, who are Penn State bound, had a pair of first period pins

A quick scan of Central Mountain High School’s wrestling roster and individual records were enough to foreshadow this one: Easton Area High School needed to win early and often and, preferably, by large margins in order to upset the undefeated Wildcats.

The Red Rovers succeeded with the first two parts, winning the first five weight classes and six of the first seven. In the end, though, they learned some leads just aren’t sizeable enough — especially against a team that’s loaded from 135 pounds to 285.

Central Mountain won the last seven matches — including five by fall — to beat Easton 40-24 on Friday afternoon in the PIAA Class AAA Team Wrestling Championships quarterfinals.

Easton bounced back with a 32-28 victory over Connellsville in the consolation bracket and still has a chance to place as high as third. The District 11 champion Red Rovers (15-7) will wrestle Kiski Area at 9 a.m. today in the second round of consolations at the Giant Center.

“They were extremely tough at the top,” Easton coach Steve Powell said of Central Mountain. “We needed at least two more wins and maybe three out of that lineup. That’s a good, experienced team.”

The District 6 champion improved to 16-0 and will take on another undefeated team, Central Dauphin, in the 11 a.m. semifinals. District 11 runner-up Parkland will face District 7 champ Canon-McMillan in the other semifinal.

Central Dauphin is attempting to win its third consecutive state dual-meet title. The final and consolation final are scheduled for 3 p.m.

Easton’s Evan Disora and Michael Fleck gave their team a promising start with back-to-back falls at 103 and 112. Robbie Rizzolino, Calvin Daly and Mitch Minotti pushed the Rovers’ advantage to 21-0 with decisions. And, after Mark Hartenstine posted a 7-0 victory over Brian Brill at 140, Easton owned a 24-4 lead over Central Mountain.

That’s when the Wildcats’ heft started to show.

Andrew and Dylan Alton — the Penn State-bound brothers who are ranked No. 1 nationally at their weights — responded with first-period pins at 145 and 152, respectively. Dylan Caprio (171) and Zach Corl (285) needed just 32 seconds combined to pin their opponents. Central Mountain’s Cody Dolan added a second-period fall at 215.

"It sure would have been great if we could have met them head-to-head." - Jeff Jordan

After crushing previously No.1 Blair Academy Graham isn’t satisfied with a co-champion.

Amateur Wrestling News, the leader in High School wrestling polling currently lists both Apple Valley, MN and St. Paris Graham, OH as co-champions.

How can this happen? I hear you asking.

That’s exactly what Graham coach Jeff Jordan was saying after he discovered on Monday, Feb. 8, that the country’s most-respected national high school pollster ranked his team and Apple Valley as co-No. 1’s. Previous No. 1 Blair Academy dropped to third.

Apple Valley was previously No. 2 and Graham No. 3. However, Graham beat Blair convincingly, 36-21, in a head-to-head dual meet in St. Paris on Jan. 30.

“It’s strange; the pundits sent a big e-mail out that there can only be one No. 1 team, then two weeks later there is a tie,” said Jordan. “We’ve been ranked No. 2 in the country for three years in a row and Blair was No. 1. But this year, they put Apple Valley ahead of us at No. 2.

“But it is what it is.”

And, with Apple Valley never running into Blair or Graham during the season, it’ll likely end up that way. “They say if Apple Valley wins their state championship and we win state, we’ll end up tied,” said Jordan. “It sure would have been great if we could have met them head-to-head.”

We at HSWrestling.Net and TheWrestlingTalk.com say the two teams should meet the week after state, give each wrestler a 3 pound allowance above their state weight classes so it’s a much easier cut, and find out who the real champion is.

The HSWrestling.Net 2009 National High School Team Rankings as well as the 2009 National Champion can be found below. After a ridiculous state tournament performance by Apple Valley & St. Paris Graham we had a very tough time picking our true number one. After much deliberation amongst our staffers here at HSWrestling we came to the conclusion that Apple Valley would likely hold off both Blair & St. Paris in a dual this season. We don’t expect to hear good things about the mythical 2009 national champions from the folks in Ohio, PA, or NJ who all had great candidates, however, we strongly believe in our selection of Apple Valley as the #1 team in the nation.

The 2008 First Team members were announced at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D. in July, where they were presented with their trophies. At the same time, it was announced that Tatiana Padilla of Northview High School in California was named the ASICS High School Wrestler of the Year for the second straight year.

There were 10 members of the 2007 First Team who were selected as First Team members again in 2008.

Three senior wrestlers made the First Team for the fourth straight year: Padilla, plus Michaela Hutchison of Skyview High School in Alaska and Joey Miller of Woodward High School in Oklahoma and.

Making the First Team for the second straight year were Victory Anthony of Marina High School in California, Brittany Delgado of Hillcrest High School in South Carolina, Beth Johnson of Garden City High School in Kansas, Marina Lambert of Indian River High School in Virginia, Helen Maroulis of Magruder High School in Maryland, Amy Whitbeck of Duanesburg High School in New York and Camie Yeik of Olympic High School in Washington.

TheMat.com/ASICS Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team is selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts. It is the only national all-star team for which female high school wrestlers competing on all four grade levels are eligible. Athletes from across the nation were considered for their achievements in high school wrestling, as well as the major post-season freestyle and folkstyle competitions.

TheMat.com is the official web page of USA Wrestling. ASICS is a national sponsor of USA Wrestling and a major supporter of wrestling at all levels. ASICS has sponsored the nationally respected ASICS High School All-American Team for boys wrestlers for 24 years.

“The ASICS Tiger Corporation is proud to be a sponsor of the All-American wrestling team for girls,” said Neil Duncan, Vice President of TW Promotions which represents ASICS. “We see this sport having a huge potential for growth, and look forward to the day when many high schools and colleges across the country offer wrestling programs for the female athlete. These are our future Olympians in women’s wrestling.”

California and Virginia led the nation with two First Team selections each. The California athletes are Padilla and Anthony. The Virginia athletes are Lambert and Schuyler Brown of Patrick Henry High School.

Two members of the First Team members were All-Americans on the Senior level in freestyle wrestling, competing against the best women wrestlers of all ages. Maroulis placed second at the U.S. Women’s Nationals, while Padilla placed fifth. At the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Padilla placed third at 55 kg/121 lbs.

The First Team featured 12 wrestlers who won national scholastic-style titles this year, by claiming gold medals at the 2008 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma or the 2008 USGWA National Championships in Michigan.

The USA Wrestling Folkstyle National champions on the First Team were Padilla, Maroulis, Miller and Delgado. The USGWA National champions on the First Team were Padilla, Brown, Delgado, Whitbeck, Johnson, Yeik and Lambert plus Randi Beltz of St. Clair High School in Missouri and CC Weber of Goodrich High School in Michigan.

There were 10 First Team members who won USA Wrestling age-group national freestyle titles in 2008 including Padilla, Maroulis, Gray, Hutchison, Miller, Brown, Johnson, Anthony, Lambert and Weber.

The First Team featured seven seniors, six juniors and one sophomore. In total, 12 states were represented on the First Team.

The Second Team was also star-studded, led by 2008 ASICS/Vaughan Junior National freestyle champions Carlene Sluberski of Fredonia High School in New York, Erin Clodgo of Vermont, who attended Marquette High School in Michigan, and Alisha Beach of Kelso High School in Washington. Also on the Second Team were USGWA National Champions Kristie Garr of Goodrich High School in Michigan, Andrea Hughes of Sahuarita High School in Arizona and Jessica Smith of Fitch High School in Ohio

The Third Team featured USA Wrestling Folkstyle National champion Olivia Fatongia of Iolani School in Hawaii plus USGWA National champions Emily Harper of DeForest High School in Wisconsin and Laura Gourley of Sweet Home High School in Oregon

As the National Federation of State High Schools has yet to determine specific weight classes for girls wrestling, the athletes were selected based solely on achievement and ability. The top 14 athletes were named to the First Team, the second 14 athletes were named to the Second Team and the third 14 athletes were selected to the Third Team. Thirty athletes were named as Honorable Mention. An effort was made to make a reasonable spread of weights on each team. If the National Federation sets specific girls weight classes in the future, the selection committee will consider using those weight classes for the selection criteria at that time.

For the TheMat.com/ASICS Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team, athletes were identified in three weight ranges: Light (100-121 pounds); Middle (122-140 pounds); Upper (141 pounds and above).

In total, 72 wrestlers were selected to TheMat.com/ASICS Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team. California led all states with 11 selections. Texas had seven team members, followed by New York with six. Both Hawaii and Michigan had five individual selections.

A total of 28 states were represented on the All-American Team. The team included 36 seniors, 19 juniors, 14 sophomores and three freshmen.

Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports among youth sports for women. It has been an Olympic sport for the last two Olympic Games, the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. There are an estimated 6,000 girls competing on the high school level in the United States today, and the number has grown each year for the last dozen years. A number of colleges have added women’s wrestling on the varsity and club level across the nation.

As early as his sophomore season at Line Mountain, Jon Fausey’s plan was to make his college decision before the start of his senior season.
Fausey made good on that plan this week when he signed a national letter of intent to continue his wrestling career at the University of Virginia. The Cavaliers won out over Cornell and Penn, but Fausey said the decision was a difficult one.

The Eagles’ two-time PIAA Class AA place-winner (second as a sophomore; third as a junior) said, “I had strong connections with the three coaches and it was a really tough decision. When I told the Penn and Cornell coaches that I chose Virginia, I kind of felt bad.”
Fausey began narrowing his college choices once he returned from Fargo, N.D., last summer, where he placed sixth at 189 pounds in the Junior and Cadet National Freestyle Tournament, earning All-America status.
“I got it down to 10 and it was still a little rough and then I finally got it down to five because I was only allowed five official visits,” he said, noting that, in addition to the final three, the others were Lehigh and Maryland.
He took visits only to Cornell, Penn and Virginia. Fausey, who will join former Line Mountain wrestler and two-time state champion Kellon Balum in Charlottesville, said the latter had no influence on his decision. He said he and Balum have talked about colleges since the latter was a high school sophomore, but when they talked during his visit to Virginia, they talked about things that friends would normally talk about.
“He never tried to influence me. I was always around his parents (Lon and Elaine Balum) and neither of them ever tried to influence me. They always said they wanted the decision to be up to me,” Fausey added.
Fausey said he had thought he would redshirt his first year, but the coaches have told him they would like him to wrestle off for a starting spot next season at 184 pounds.
“I thought maybe I would like a year to develop, but I think if I have a pretty good offseason and do the right things and start training and get a lot of tips from the coaches, that I will be ready to go. I guess that’s the plan right now,” he said.
Fausey said the early decision was typical of the way he handles his life.
“I’m the type of person that likes getting things taken care of and out of the way, and that’s what happened,” he said. “If I really wasn’t sure of a school or really wasn’t recruited hard and wanted to show myself my senior year, maybe I would have waited. But the opportunity came up and it happened,” said Fausey, son of Ray Fausey.
“It does take the pressure off for my senior year. I wouldn’t have wanted to do this during my senior year of wrestling, getting phone calls all the time. I had some nights when I’d been on the phone for a couple hours and it got to be 9:30 or 10 and I didn’t get my homework started. It was overwhelming at times, and really frustrating.”
Now he can concentrate on his goal of winning a state championship. “I’m focused on getting healthy, but I have the same mind set going into the season — getting into the practice room every day, improving and getting stronger and making myself a better wrestler, and going into the postseason looking to win states,” he said.
“And having fun,” he added. “That’s a big part of it, too.”
Fausey had surgery this week for a torn meniscus, which sidelined him from football, a sport in which he was an all-state linebacker. He will not play again during the regular season, but has not ruled out a return in the playoffs.
He returns to the doctor in two and a half weeks and, if he is cleared and told that he would not do further damage to the knee by playing football, then he would like to play for the Eagles if they make the District 4 Class A playoffs.
As for college, Fausey plans to major in pre-med and plans to either pursue a career as a physician or a physician’s assistant.
He becomes the second Fausey brother to wrestle in college. His older brother, Shawn, also a former state runner-up at Line Mountain, will be a sophomore at Drexel this season. He missed most of last season with a broken ankle sustained while wrestling in last year’s Penn State Open.
Jon said there is a slight chance that he and Shawn could meet on the mat sometime during their careers, but it would likely be in the NCAA Tournament, because Drexel and Virginia are not scheduled to meet in any duels or tournaments.

Three-time state champions David Taylor (112) of St. Paris (Ohio) Graham High, Alex Meade (152) of Camden Wyoming (Del.) Caesar Rodney High and Jason Welch (160) of Walnut Creek (Calif.) Las Lomas High are repeat selections to the 14-member First Team as the 23rd annual ASICS All-America Wrestling Team was announced today.

The ASICS All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible. ASICS is a title sponsor of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Fargo Junior National Championships and is a major benefactor of the sport at all levels.

“This team represents the best of the best in our schools today,” said Neil Duncan and Nick Gallo of ASICS and TW Promotions, Inc. “We are proud to have these young men, with their talent and work ethic, representing us. They are clearly the World and Olympic champions of the future.”

Members of the First Team, as well as the ASICS Wrestler of the Year, will be honored prior to the finals of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior National Freestyle Championships in July at Fargo, N.D.

The ASICS All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes – the First, Second, and Third Teams and five Honorable Mention selections. Wrestlers are considered at the weight class at which they competed in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships this year.

Taylor, Meade and Welch are among nine First Team members to finish their careers with at least three state or National Prep titles. Joining them are Eric Grajales (130) of Brandon (Fla.) High, Collin Palmer (135) of Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward High, Michael Mangrum (145) of Auburn (Wash.) Riverside High, Ryland Geiger (189) of Scappoose (Ore.) High and Marcel Dubose (215) of Oak Park (Mich.) High, all three-time state champions, and Jason Chamberlain (140) of Springville (Utah) High, the lone four-time state champion to earn First Team honors.

Taylor, Grajales and Palmer, all juniors, and sophomore Logan Stieber (119) of Monroeville (Ohio) High are the four underclassmen on the squad. The rest of the First Team: Mark Rappo (103) of Holland (Pa.) Council Rock South High, Nate Moore (125) of Iowa City (Iowa) West High, Quentin Wright (171) of Wingate (Pa.) Bald Eagle Area High and Eric Thompson (285) of Waverly (Iowa) Waverly-Shell Rock High. All four are seniors.

Iowa City West, one of four schools with three wrestlers selected, was the only school with three selections to the First, Second and Third teams. Blair Academy, Graham and Monroeville also had three selections. Riverside, St. Edward, Waverly-Shell Rock, Apple Valley (Minn.) High, Carol Stream (Ill.) Glenbard North High, Easton (Pa.) High, Kansas City (Mo.) Oak Park High, Mill Hall (Pa.) Central Mountain High, Orland Park (Ill.) Carl Sandburg High and Troy (N.Y.) LaSalle Institute each had two wrestlers selected.

The team also includes three brother combinations. Logan Stieber was joined by freshman brother Hunter (103), along with junior Tony (125) and senior Vince Ramos (145) of Glenbard North and sophomore twins Dylan (135) and Andrew Alton (140) of Central Mountain.

The 14 First Team members combined to post 37 state high school or National Prep championships, along with nine Junior National and 14 Cadet National titles. The Second and Third Teams are not far behind. The Second Team combined for 24 state or National Prep titles, including four three-time champions, to go with five Junior National and seven Cadet National titles. The Third Team boasts 23 combined state titles, one Junior National and eight Cadet National crowns.

Ohio had the most overall selections, placing 16 wrestlers on the squad, including a national-best three First Team selections and six on the top three teams. Pennsylvania had 13 selections and Illinois 11, followed by New Jersey (eight), California and Iowa (seven), Oregon (six) and Minnesota and Washington (five). The 112 wrestlers selected come from 26 states.
