After 30 years of being the Brown University wrestling coach, it was time for Dave Amato to retire.
“It’s been an honor to coach at Brown for the last 30 years,” said Amato. “Coaching the many outstanding young men at Brown has been a privilege, and I wish the program the best of luck in the future.
Amato led the Brown Bears wrestling program to 379 career wins, ranking him 3rd among all NCAA Division I active coaches. He has coached Ivy League Wrestlers of the Year ( Bob Hill 1988 / 1989 and Willie Carpenter (1997 1998) and three Ivy League Rookie of the Year winners (E.C. Muelhaupt (1986), Willie Carpenter (1993) and Bronson Lingamfelter (1999).
27 different Brown wrestlers under Amato have earned First Team All-Ivy honors (a total of 44 different times, led by four-time All-Ivy wrestler Joe Mocco in 1993). Two were All-Americans; Tivon Abel in 1998 and the aforementioned Willie Carpenter in 1996.
Dave Amato’s teams always fared well in school as well. The National Wrestling Coaches association recognized Brown’s wrestling squad for having the highest GPA in the country in 2005-2006. The next year it was even higher though it fell to 3rd highest in the country.
