With the future of Olympic Wrestling in peril, Las Vegas Nevada braces for 2015′s international wrestling event; the 2015 World Wrestling Championships set for Orleans Arena. It will act as the first and biggest qualifying event to send wrestlers to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Obviously the big story-line going forward is the potential that this is one of the last wrestling qualifiers for the Olympics, thanks to the International Olympic Committee’s intentions. Wrestling’s time as an Olympic Wrestling sport will end after the 2016 Olympics as the plan for the 2020 Olympics is to not have wrestling a part of it.
USA Wrestling won the bid to host the international event and chose Las Vegas as the site for the qualifying event. It is the fifth time a wrestling world championship will take place in the United States. Previous wrestling events were held in New York, Atlanta, San Diego, and Toledo Ohio.
The Las Vegas competition will be presented by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, USA Wrestling, the U.S Olympic Committee, and Las Vegas Events. Pat Christenson, the President of Las Vegas Events and a former collegiate wrestler, said the championships are a culmination of decades of support for the sport. All three Olympic styles of wrestling are scheduled; men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman.
