Where: Lakewood St. Edward
What: Dual Meet
These two teams faced each other last year at Blair where it came down to one match to win it all, Edgar Bright of St. Ed’s vs. Mark Grey of Blair. Winner of that match would decide which team would win the National Championship. It was a very good match though there were some “questionable” calls. Mark Grey escaped with the victory. However, the loss made St. Edward hungry for revenge.
Tonight was senior night, so it was the last time our senior Eagles would be wrestling in Lakewood. The first match of the night was sophomore state qualifier L.J. Bentley, who faced Freshman Matt Deehan of Blair. L.J. came off strong and was aggressive throughout the entire match. Two periods in, he looked like the better competitor up 8-3. He won this match 12-4, and got St. Ed’s up to an early 4-0 lead.
Next up was the 113 weight class. Where it was senior Sal Corrao versus sophomore national prep champ, Jordan Cutler. The match was close going into the third period, with Sal down 4-2. In the third, Sal was going for an escape and was taken to out of bounds. The crowd wanted a call for stalling, but they were not rewarded one. Sal could not make up the deficit and lost this match 5-2. St. Ed’s was still up 4-3 for the match
Next up was the 120 weight class, where freshman Austin Hiles faced sophomore Ohio State champ Matt Kolodzick. In this match, you could see the experience of Kolodzick. Austin did well, lost the match getting pinned in the second.
Next at the 126 class, senior Chance Driscoll faced junior Alex Rindoli. Rindoli came off strong and was up early. Chance seemed to be coming back at the end and had a little momentum, but it was just too a little too late. Blair won this match 8-4, making the overall competition 12-4, with Blair up.
Now that Blair had taken control, St. Ed’s needed to find someone to get the momentum back. Who better than Dean Heil, senior wrestler who is a 3x State champ and maybe St. Ed’s best wrestler. He faced Joe Mckenna at 132. The match was tied 0-0 after 1, but then Dean got in the zone and started to take over. Dean won this one 7-4 and made it 12-7.
Next up at 138 was state runner up Colin Heffernman vs. freshman Mason Manville who was 2nd at Iron man. It was even at 0-0 through two, but then in the third, Manville took advantage of a little mistake by Heffernman and took a 6-2 lead. Heffernman held on to win and making it 15-7 Blair.
That match was big for Blair, yet Ed’s was still in it. At the 145 class, senior 2x state runner up Edgar Bright vs. 2x national runner up in Dylan Milonas. This match was Edgar from beginning to end. Edgar looked angry and wanted revenge from last year’s match. He didn’t let Dylan get anything going and won 14-5 with a major victory. The overall score was now 11-15 with Blair still up.
Next up was 2x state placer senior Markus Scheidel vs. national prep champion Russ Parsons. Markus seemed to take the momentum after Edgar’s match and took an early lead of 4-1 in the first. In the second however, Markus took over and got a 14-5 lead. He finished this great match with a technical fall at 23-8. Giving Eds the lead again at 16-15.
Next was Robbie Rogers who faced Blair’s Jack Wedholm who finished 6th at Ironman. After one it was close with Robbie being down 2-3. In the second, Wedholm got a 9-2 lead. In the third, Jack was going for the major win. He had it with 30 seconds left and tried to keep Robbie down, but Robbie made an escape and made it an 11-4 defeat. The overall was now 18-16, Blair back up.
Next up was Junior Ray Barr who faced National Prep Champ, Patrick Coover. Coover took over at the beginning and controlled the match winning it 12-2. Making it 22-16 Blair.
Once again Ed’s was in need of a win to close the gap. The fans could think of no one better to try and deliver a victory than Dominic Abanator, the 2x state champ. Abanator was facing Addison Kneephied. Dom delivered controlling the Blair wrestler through the entire match and winning 10-1. This brought Ed’s back to 22-20 in the overall match.
Junior Gabe Dzuro followed in the 195 pound class, facing national champ Frankie Mattiace. Gabe kept it close early, but Mattiace kept the pressure on. Gabe tried for an escape at the end but came up short losing 14-6, making it 26-20 Blair on top with two matches left.
The 220 lb class featured St. Ed’s Parker Knapp versus junior Will Cooley of Blair. In this match, Parker got off to a rocky start and was down most of the match. With the crowd cheering him on to try and mount a comeback, Parker fell short losing 10-5.
The last match of the night was at the 285 class where Ralph Nichols faced off against the number one wrestler in the nation, Brooks Black. This match was for pride more than anything else. Ralph tried his best, but there is a reason why Brooks is the number one wrestler in the nation. He ended up pinning Nichols and making the final score 32-20 Blair.
After the match, head coach Greg Urbas said “We worked very, very hard, and I’m proud of these kids. Now we have to look past this and get ready for Solon next Wednesday and worry about the dual state championship next Saturday. Then we got to worry about States after that.”
There is still a lot of schedule left for St. Ed’s and they will bounce back for sure. They just have to take it one match at a time.
