The Ed Winger Classic features five of the top eight teams in the 3-A rankings, including No. 1 Southeast Polk and No. 2 Bettendorf. The brackets will be packed with many of the state’s top stars, featuring nine wrestlers ranked No. 1 in 3-A and 69 ranked wrestlers.
Three brackets — 126, 132 and 160 — could create championship bouts between the top two wrestlers in the 3-A rankings. Three more weights — 106, 113 and 138 — include six rated wrestlers.
“It was the biggest (regular season) tournament of the year 25 years ago,” said Dan Knight, a four-time undefeated state champion at Clinton. “We always said if you could place at Urbandale, you could place at state.”
The 132-pound bracket could reinforce that statement. Five of the top six in 3-A are at the weight.
