After being on the road, it always feels good to come back home.
The state wrestling tournament returns to Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark this Friday and Saturday after being parceled out to three sites last year due to the tornado that damaged the arena in June 2010.
This year has the potential to produce some Metra magic as four wrestlers — Ben Stroh of Chinook (189 pounds), Luke Zeiger of Glasgow (140), Luke Schlosser of Conrad (119) and Cole Mendenhall (140) of Great Falls High — will try to join the elite list of four-time individual champions. Only 19 wrestlers in Montana history have accomplished the feat.
“We have four people going for four-time state championships, which is unheard of,” said Brian Michelotti of the Montana High School Association, who will be the tournament director. “Those four are unbelievable wrestlers, and I’m looking forward to watching them.”
It is not yet known which of the four potential four-timers will be up first in the finals. Since 2010, a random draw has been used to determine at which weight class the finals will start rather than automatically starting at 98 pounds.
This year’s finals will feature a new start time of 4 p.m., which is two hours earlier than in past years.
Michelotti said most people were in favor of the earlier start time.
