Brent Fickel (H.M. @ 132) Crowned Champ over Kagan Squire (H.M. @ 132) at Brecksville

Padua senior wrestler Brent Fickel (H.M. @ 132) was in a repeating kind of mood last weekend, as he won his second straight individual championship at the Brecksville Holiday Tournament.

Fickel won the 132-pound weight class title with five straight wins, which brought his season record to 25 victories and three losses.

Padua finished eighth in team standings out of 37 schools taking part in the tournament. The Bruins also had one of their wrestlers finish in second place, and another in third place. Padua junior Tom McNulty finished second in the 145-pound weight class. He scored four victories in the tournament, including one win. Senior Bobby Mason finished in third in the 126-pound division for Padua. He scored five wins in the tourney, including one pin and one technical fall.

Padua freshman Kyle Kaminiski finished in eighth place at 120 pounds. He had three wins, including one pin.

Fickel, who finished third in last winter’s Division II state finals (130 pounds), said he was especially pleased with his victory in the semifinals match last weekend at Brecksville. In this match, he was paired against Kagan Squire (H.M. @ 132) of Wadsworth. Squire finished second in Division I state finals last winter in his weight class.

“I was losing by two points with only about 20 seconds left to go,” Fickel said. “But I was able to hook his (Squire’s) leg. Then I got him in a cradle.”

In this match, Fickel was trailing by a score of 4-2. With the takedown, he scored two points to tie the score. Then, he was awarded three back points, giving him a 7-4 win over Squire.
