Gillette (WY) Wins The Rapid City Individual Wrestling Tournament – Results

Thirty high school wrestling teams took to the mats Friday and Saturday at the Rapid City Individual Tournament and Gillette (Wyo.) won the big tournament by 5 points over Pierre.

Gillette totaled 184 points to 178 for Pierre. Aberdeen Central finished in the middle of the pack in 15th place with 80 points.

One of the positives for the Golden Eagles was advancing nine wrestlers to Saturday’s round including Trevor Hieb (113 pounds), Zach Russman (126), Griffin Hieb (138), Levi Haar (145), Mitchell Johnson (152), Zach Melcher (160), Brenden Miller (182), Aaron Henley (195) and Sam Schaunaman (heavyweight).

One of the negatives was that Central proceeded to lose eight of those matches on the second day.

“It is a real tough tournament,” said Central wrestling coach Shawn Lewis. “We had nine guys make it to the second day which was a real positive but we lost eight of nine matches the first round of the second day. That’s hard to swallow. Our kids were right there and just needed to make that second step.”

The only Central wrestler to place was Griffin Hieb and he had to knock off several rated wrestlers to take home a third place finish. Griffin Hieb lost his very first match of the tournament 11-8 to a wrestler from Gillette, Wyo., on Friday. After that Griffin Hieb recorded three pins and four decisions. He defeated Cain Glanzer of Huron 10-6 in overtime, Blake Stone of Rapid City Central 12-0 and Nick Monteith of Sturgis 2-1 in three overtimes.

“Griffin’s second day was a highlight. He beat the Rapid City kid who’s ranked fourth in the state, Glanzer from Huron who’s a returning state champion and number one rated, and the Monteith kid who’s rated number two. Monteith beat Griffin in triple overtime in the first round last year in the Rapid City tournament. He beat the first, second and fourth rated kid in the state. If you place in the top eight at Rapid City you should be able to place in the top eight at state,” said Lewis.
