The New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced Friday its wrestling state tournament will be conducted at the Times Union Center in Albany from 2013 through 2016. The announcement comes after NYSPHSAA’s wrestling state committee unanimously voted in favor of a bid submitted by the Times Union Center in October.
The state wrestling event has been at Times Union Center since 2009 and the four-year contract was scheduled to end with the 50th state wrestling tournament in February 24-25, 2012. Times Union Center also hosted the event in 2005 and 2007.
“Hosting the New York State High School Wrestling Championships at the Times Union Center has helped stimulate business for downtown Albany restaurants, hotels and businesses while providing an excellent facility for the student athletes to compete in,” said Bob Belber, SMG Regional General Manager at Times Union Center. “We are thrilled to host this state championship event thru 2016. On behalf of our SMG staff and Albany County, we thank NYSPHSAA and the Wrestling State Committee for their vote to award 2013-2016 to Albany.”
More than 12,000 fans attended the 2011 event. The event saw a record attendance of 17,323 in 2005 (now ranks second) in Albany, and an additional 15,034 in the arena in 2007 despite poor weather. Previous venues include the Onondaga County War Memorial (1974-2003), University at Buffalo (2004), and Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale (2006)
