After losing in last year’s CIF state championship, Davis came back this season and captured the 152-pound state crown by defeating Newark Memorial’s Victor Pereira 9-5. Davis became Santa Fe’s first state champion since 2002, when Angel Wong accomplished the feat at 103.
Winning the state title was “a dream come true” for Davis, who earned his second consecutive Daily News Wrestler of the Year award.
“Going into the season, losing the state championship last year hurt me,” Davis said. “For my junior year, I wanted to train a little harder. I wanted to work on the little things I didn’t do during my sophomore year, and it helped me this year.”
Davis added to his list of accomplishments earlier this month when he won the 152-pound championship at the FloNationals in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Before winning the state title, Davis won the Del Rio League crown and took first place at both the CIF-Southern Section Eastern Division and CIF-SS Masters tournaments.
Davis finished his season with a 52-1 record.
