Senior Bryce Hammond of Bakersfield (CA) grabs the top spot at 160 lbs after going undefeated this season and capturing his 2nd California State Championship with a 7-3 decision over No. 9 Vince Waldhauser. Bryce would finish the year with a big overtime win over No. 3 Travis McKillop at the Dapper Dan and won the 2011 NHSCA Senior National Championships. Staying right at home for college, Hammond will be wrestling at Cal State Bakersfield next season and provides them with a big N.o 1 recruit at 165 lbs.
Junior Taylor Massa of St. Johns (MI) rolled out another undefeated season, going 61-0 and winning his 3rd Michigan State Championship. Known to be a pinning machine, Massa has not lost during his high school career. With a career record of 186-0 and National Titles in all 3 wrestling styles, Massa has the ability to do great things in the future. As he gears up for his Senior season, look for Taylor Massa to be near the top of next years top senior recruits, as all colleges should be heavily interested in acquiring him.
Senior Travis McKillop of Burrell (PA) rounds out the top 3 after finishing the season strong with a Pennsylvania AA State Title over his rival No. 4 Cody Wiercioch. Wiercioch would get the best of McKillop twice this season, once at the stacked 160-pound bracket of the Walsh Ironman and the other at the WPIAL District Tournament, but not at the biggest and most important match of the season, the state finals. McKillop would also win this seasons Powerade Tournament over Wiercioch (split 2-2) and finished the season with a record of 52-2. Expect Travis McKillop to provide the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown with plenty of success at the Division II level next season.
