Update: Brewer recently knocked off Ohio State’s Logan Stieber at FILA Juniors.
“He operated under an enormous amount of pressure with the four-time thing,” said Oak Park coach Tim Rupp. “But you know, for a lot of upper-echelon athletes, most of the pressure they feel is self-imposed.”
Brewer was no different, Rupp said. He expected to go undefeated this season. He expected to become a four-time state champion.
Basically, he expected to be perfect.
Perfection, it turned out, didn’t happen, thanks to a loss to an undefeated state champion from Illinois. But that was his only blemish. He posted a sterling 51-1 record and became only the 20th wrestler in state history to be a four-time champion.
For all that, Brewer — who will wrestle next season at Oklahoma — is The Star’s All-Metro Wrestler of the Year for the 2010-2011 season.
Brewer had a memorable year. He won the super competitive Toshiba Midwest Classic, had two wins over the Missouri Class 4 state champion and had individual wins over six state runners-up. He capped it all with his 12th consecutive state title, dating to his youth club wrestling days.
