No. 1 Jessie Thielke (53-0) of Germantown (WI) wrapped up his high school career this season with his 4th Wisconsin State Title. A dominating career, Thielke is one of the top recruits in the nation and is committed to wrestle with the University of Wisconsin in 2012. Before he attends college, Thielke will head off to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, with the aspirations of being a contender for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. Thielke put his No. 1 ranking on the line at this years Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, as he comfortably beat No. 2 Zach Horan 8-3. With his solid high school career now behind him, Thielke has just about everything going for him as he moves on to the next level.
No. 2 Zach Horan (49-0) of Nazareth (PA) hadn’t won a Pennsylvania Individual State Title in each of the past 3 seasons (3X – 2nd Place) until recently clearing the hurdle and winning his first PA State Title after an impressive undefeated season. Horan, winner of the Beast of the East Tournament with a 4-2 victory over No. 9 Todd Preston in the finals, also claimed a championship at the Bethlehem Holiday Tournament. Horan’s only blemish of the season was in the Dapper Dan, where Jesse Thielke got the best of him. Horan has the ability to be a successful college wrestler, where you’ll see him at Central Michigan next season.
At No. 3, Ben Whitford (41-1) of Marmion Academy (IL) capped off an impressive season with an Illinois Class 2A State Title. He finished the year with just one loss, going to Mike Avelar (H.M. @ 135) after Ben was wrestling up a weight class. This years Walsh Ironman Champion, Whitford took down both No. 4 Brandon Jeske and No. 9 Todd Preston in the process. To add to his seasons achievements, Whitford also defeated Honorable Mention Joey Gosinski (IL 3A State Champ) 12-5 at the Al Dvorak Wrestling Tournament. Whitford, only a sophomore, should continue to climb the charts as his young career takes off.
