Evan Knutson (No. 15 @ HWT), who posted a 45-5 mark in his senior season with three of losses coming to Wisconsin Rapids’ Curt Fuller (H.M. @ HWT). Each matchup with Fuller was decided in overtime, including in the Division 1 title match at 285 pounds.
Knutson will also share the Daily Herald’s wrestler of the year honors with Aaron Karlen of Edgar.
Aaron Karlen was one of the state’s most dominant wrestlers in the WIAA Division 3 field this season as the Edgar senior beat every opponent he faced with one notable exception.Karlen finished with a 45-2 record, with both losses coming to Bonduel’s Ben Tauschen, including a 6-4 setback in the 215-pound title match at the state individual wrestling meet.
Knutson beat Fuller in overtime to finish third at state as a junior, and the two Wisconsin Valley Conference foes continued that rivalry this season with Fuller getting the upper hand.
“We always battle like that,” Knutson said. “We’re both hard workers and committed to the sport. I’m glad I lost to someone who has that dedication and work ethic. It was a tough match, and it is what it is. I’m just going to refocus on college wrestling next year and be ready for that.”
“It’s exciting and stressful at the same time,” Knutson said of the recruiting process. “Just knowing that people want me to come to their school and feel that I have potential is exciting.”
