Cassy Herkelman still is causing a stir.
Herkelman won her weight class Sunday at the United States Girls’ Wrestling Association Iowa Meet at North High School.
In February, Herkelman and Ottumwa’s Megan Black became the first girls to qualify for the traditional state wrestling meet. Herkelman turned into a household name when Linn-Mar of Marion’s Joel Northrup refused to wrestle her, saying he did not think it was appropriate for a boy to compete against a girl in a violent sport.
Herkelman won that bout by default, then was eliminated after losing her next two matches.
Sunday was much different: No controversy, no defeats.
“Not to be cocky, but I haven’t lost to a girl since second or third grade,” Herkelman said. “I do get nervous sometimes.”
