Nico Megaludis (No. 1 @ 125) looks back at himself as “just a 103-pound little kid” when he made his first appearance at the PIAA Class AAA wrestling championships as a freshman in 2008.
“I guess I’m still a little 125-pound kid now,” he quickly added.
But now, the “little kid” is going down in the PIAA history books as one of the state’s best high school wrestlers.
Franklin Regional’s Megaludis wrapped up his scholastic career with a textbook, 16-4, victory against Boyertown senior Jeremy Minich in the 125-pound final Saturday evening at Giant Center.
That gave Megaludis his third PIAA gold medal, becoming only the 48th wrestler to win that many. It also allowed him to close out his career with a 170-1 record and on a 135-match winning streak.
The only high school defeat for Megaludis, who is ranked No. 1 nationally in his weight class, came March 8, 2008, in the 103-pound PIAA semifinals to Council Rock South’s Mark Rappo.
Megaludis (51-0), a Penn State recruit, was by far the favorite to come home with a PIAA title, but he found his 4-1 win against Devon Lotito of Bethlehem Liberty in the semifinals to be uninspiring.
