While Avon junior Zane Zeman enjoyed finishing as the Division II state runner-up, he plans on immediately getting to work on an upgrade for next season.
Zeman won his first three matches in Columbus to reach the 145-pound final, wrestled two-time state champion Bo Jordan (No.5 @ 145) of St. Paris Graham tough for three minutes but finally succumbed to the superstar sophomore and was pinned in the second period.
“He had that half (nelson) on me for a while, and he was really cranking it,” Zeman said. “That dude’s strong … really strong. I felt my shoulder pop and a shot of really intense pain.”
Zeman struggled to pull himself off the mat and labored to shake the opposing coaches’ hands after the match. Even though Eagles coach Mark Porter thought Zeman had closed the gap on Jordan since Zeman suffered a 14-5 major decision defeat during the state quarterfinals last season, the Avon wrestler didn’t see it the same way.
“He pinned me in the second period,” Zeman said.
The championship loss doesn’t tarnish another great season. He finished as a state alternate during his freshman season, went 1-2 in Columbus last year and climbed the ladder once again this season.
Zeman said he hopes to get another crack at Jordan next season, but it’s unclear whether that might happen at the state tournament. Zeman didn’t say he would take steps to ensure the pair would be at the same weight during the postseason or that he’d make sure they were at different weights.
