Taylor Massa (No. 2 @ 160) had to work a little harder than Alec Mooradian (H.M. @ 135) to become a three-time state wrestling champion.
While Mooradian, a junior at Detroit Catholic Central, won the 135-pound title in Division 1 by injury default, while Massa had to sweat a little more than normal to take the 160-pound championship in Division 2 on Saturday in the individual finals at The Palace.
Massa, a junior at St. Johns, increased his career record to 186-0 — 61-0 this season — with a 24-9 technical fall win over Adam Bonner of Greenville. It was the first time in the tournament Massa wrestled into the second period.
Mooradian wanted to earn his third title on the mat. He learned at noon in a phone call from his coach, Mitch Hancock, that Jake Weissend of Flint Carman-Ainsworth would injury default.
“It’s really frustrating because I wanted to wrestle,” Mooradian said. “I worked real hard for this one match and it didn’t take place. It’s still exciting to be a three-time state champion. It’s pretty impressive. I’m going to work hard this summer to do it again next year.”
Durand senior Roger Wildmo (No. 4 @ 152) also became a three-time state champion, joining Mooradian by winning by way of injury default. Wildmo finished his career at 230-2.
Like Massa, Mason senior Conor Youtsey (No. 5 @ 119) had to earn his third title on the mat. He had a 13-2 major decision over Allegan freshman Kyle Simaz in the 119-pound final in Division 2. Simaz had defeated two former state champions en route to the title match.
