Eastern’s Robert Deutsch (No. 2 @ 119) is back on top.
Deutsch, who won the state 112-pound title as a sophomore, but finished third at 119 a year ago, re-established himself as one of the most dominant lower weights in the state as he posted a 7-4 victory over South Plainfield sophomore Troy Heilmann for the 119-pound championship Sunday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
“Its an amazing feeling to be able to come down here and win another state title,” said Deutsch (42-0), who was the state runner-up at 103 in 2008. “I’m not that emotional, but is very special to me. Every wrestler strives to be undefeated and I was able to get it done.”
Deutsch quickly got on the scoreboard with a takedown just 15 seconds into the first period. He held a 4-2 lead after one period and was up 6-4 with 52 seconds left in the second.
Heilmann shot in with designs on a match-tying takedown, but Deutsch was too strong with his stance and fought his way out of harms way.
