Vacaville High School wrestling fans might want to try giving Johnny Schupp some bad news before every match.
Schupp, already one of the most talented Bulldogs, had a little extra incentive when he marched out on the mat for the heavyweight final of the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament at Stockton Arena on Saturday.
“I found out we lost the team title, and I was kind of upset,” Schupp said after he dominated Gavin Andrews (No.12 @ HWT) of Granite Bay 12-2. “I wanted to go out and win one for the team.”
Schupp was one of eight Vacaville wrestlers to advance to next week’s CIF state championships in Bakersfield on a busy day.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Schupp was the only one of four Vacaville finalists to win a Masters crown. Oakdale had three individual champions and finished with 196 points to Vacaville’s 183.5, preventing the Bulldogs from claiming their fifth straight Masters team title. Elk Grove was a distant third.
