Archbishop Spalding’s Charlie Lynch (No. 15 @ 145) and John Carroll’s Mathew Miller both won their first National Prep Championships on Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa.
For Lynch — who won the title for the 145-pound weight class and helped the Cavaliers to a third-place finish in the overall team standings — it meant a major improvement from his fifth-place finish of a year ago. It also kept his individual record perfect, as he concludes the season at 62-0. He ran off five wins over the past two days, winning with a pin in 1:18, a 16-0 technical fall, a 10-3 decision, a 4-0 decision, and a 17-1 technical fall in the final. Lynch’s closest match, the 4-0 decision, came in the semifinal against Mount St. Joseph’s Brady Massaro.
Lynch also received the Gerald Leeman Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament award.
