Zillah High’s Chris Castillo (No.14 @ 160) joined the pantheon of the state’s elite by becoming the seventh boy to win four state titles. He stopped Connell’s Jacob Rae, 15-4, to win the 160 title at 1A.
And Kiona-Benton’s Sheridan McDonald blazed a new trail for four-timers, becoming the first girl to accomplish the same feat. She beat Stanwood’s Whitney Weinert, 7-1, in the girls’ 135 finals.
Castillo and McDonald were two of The News Tribune’s seven 2010-11 “Untouchables” who won championships. Also among the winners was Orting High’s Drew Templeman (125), who has a chance to go for four titles next season.
Castillo’s pursuit for a fourth title ended the same way it began – with confidence, humility and unmatched poise on the mat.
After he got a takedown in the final seconds, the Boise State-bound standout crossed his arms over and gave the four-finger wave to his home cheering section.
“I think I finished well, and did better than the last couple years match-wise. I still ended up in the same place – first place,” Castillo said. “I feel like the pressure is off my shoulders now, and I feel I can finally relax and be a kid.”
