The boo birds were chirping Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
They were protesting a decision made by an athletic trainer from Iowa State University that ended the 160-pound semifinal match at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament between Sioux City East’s Ethan Lara and top-ranked Justin Koethe (HM @ 160) of Iowa City West.
Lara dislocated his left shoulder when he was illegally slammed to the mat late in the first period. He trailed 4-3 at the time, but he was declared the winner by injury default and qualified for tonight’s state finals.
“He’s fine,” East coach Vince Pederson said of Lara (22-4), the lone Northwest Iowan to advance to the finals.
