Among the stunning developments of Friday’s Class 3-A evening session at the traditional state wrestling tournament, perhaps the most was a near surprise.
Cory Clark (No. 8 @ 119) of Southeast Polk extended his career record to 128-0, but just barely, beating Eric DeVos (No. 10 @ 119) of Waverly-Shell Rock, 7-6 on a reversal with 32 seconds left. DeVos was a state champion last year.
It was the closest match of Clark’s high school career.
“I had a couple two-point matches my freshman year,” Clark said. “One-point, two-points, it’s kind of the same thing.”
Clark, a junior, had allowed three takedowns and no reversals in his career until Friday. Second-ranked DeVos (45-1) scored a takedown in the first period, and reversed Clark twice, the last to take a 6-5 lead in the third period. Clark later responded in kind.
