5 things you should know about

By: Cody Dyer of the Carthage Press

1. Mizzou Arena

Mizzou Arena, located on the campus of the University of Columbia, opened in November of 2004. The facility, home of the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, replaced the Hearnes Center as the school’s main indoor sports facility. The arena is host to Missouri State High School Activities Association championships for basketball and wrestling.

2. Tourney schedule

The 2011 MSHSAA Wrestling Championships begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at Mizzou Arena, with Class 3 and Class 4 first-round matches and first-round wrestlebacks. Class 3 wrestling resumes at 1:30 p.m. on Friday with quarterfinals and second-round wrestlebacks. Semifinals for all classes take place at 6 p.m. Friday along with third-round wrestlebacks.

Fourth-round wrestlebacks for all classes begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with third-place and fifth-place matches following at noon. The Finalist March starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday with the championship finals (for all classes) following at 4:30 p.m.

3. Cost of admission

The price of admission is $8 per session (good for one entry to the facility). Tickets are available on site or by contacting  MSHSAA at (573) 875-4880.

4. Match broadcast

Individual matches, for each session and class, will be broadcast live and archived on MSHSAA.tv. Complete results and coverage of all the action will be made available online at carthagepress.com and inside The Carthage Press.

5. Pairing formula

Pairings for the MSHSAA Wrestling Championships, according to mshsaa.org, are made by three predetermined rotations. Each weight class was drawn independently for the 2011 Wrestling Championships as recommended by the Wrestling Advisory Committee.

This season, the Carthage Tigers — for the second time under coach Kenny Brown — qualified eight individuals for the state tournament. The Neosho Wildcats, the defending Class 3 champion, enter as the early favorite to capture team honors this season.
