A Dallas High School wrestler collapsed after a match at Silverton High School at 7 p.m. Thursday.
An autopsy determined Engelfried died of a heart condition, Oregon State Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Larry Lewman said. Lewman conducted an autopsy this morning.
Engelfried had an enlarged heart because of an underlying condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Arrhythmia, a disturbance in the heart’s rhythm, caused sudden death, Lewman said.
Lewman said hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common cause of student athlete deaths in Oregon.
