Holt’s Dominic Trevino pumped his fist in the air and let out a scream of joy before receiving a celebratory hug from nearly all of his Holt teammates.
The sophomore wrestler had just pinned former teammate and current Grand Ledge junior Freddie Rodriguez (No. 7 @ 119), who is a two-time state champion and was ranked No. 1 in the state at 119 pounds. The victory was one of many for the Rams, who won nine of 14 finals matches en route to a first-place finish at Saturday’s CAAC Blue league wrestling tournament at Holt High.
“I was just shocked and beyond happy – it was the biggest win I’ve ever had,” Trevino said of his victory over the previously unbeaten Rodriguez. “It was special to me because, really, he taught me a lot of what I know.”
Rodriguez and Trevino were practice partners last year at Holt, but Rodriguez transferred to Grand Ledge for this school year. Rodriguez was moved up from his usual weight class of 119 pounds to 125 pounds in this match.
