The Beast of the East, a major high school wrestling tournament, will be held December 18 & 19, 2010, at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center. This two-day annual event is expected to generate an overall economic impact of over $1 million including overnight accommodations, food, transportation, shopping, and miscellaneous expenses.
“The Delaware Sports Commission is thrilled to partner with the Delaware Wrestling Alliance (DWA) and the University of Delaware (UD) to ensure continued success of this elite sporting event,” said Matthew Sparks, executive director of the Delaware Sports Commission.
A not-for-profit organization, the DWA is comprised of members from the Delaware wrestling community. The DWA promotes the sport of wrestling in Delaware at all levels and, with the aid of volunteers and organizations, provides funding for wrestling programs, competitions, awards, and recognition. Since its inception in 1996, the DWA has awarded $546,000 in athletic scholarships, $60,000 of which was awarded this year.
“Eighty-five percent of the 800 wrestlers who will compete in the Beast of the East tournament will be traveling from out-of-state,” said Sparks. “Delaware’s central location, affordability, and site capacity create an ideal destination for team members and their families.”
In addition to the dozens of restaurants and retail options in the surrounding area, several hotels are supporting this event.
“This competition is highly regarded in the wrestling community,” said Matthew Sparks. “Teams, fans, and college coaches will travel from across the country to be part of the toughest high school tournament in the nation.”
