The tree top finish is one of the best low risk finishes for the single leg. This same finish can go by many names (high outside finish, foot sweep finish, etc.. take your pick), but the result is the same.

Once in on the single, pop the ankle under your armpit keeping control over your opponents foot. You should have it so tight that the only way he will get loose is if the shoe comes off. It has become more and more common to see athletes counter this move by doing this:

The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling program, fresh off a superb 2007-08 campaign, has finalized its recruiting class for the upcoming year. Ten outstanding high school talents are set to help the powerful program continue its climb on the national scene.

The class begins, alphabetically, with Justin Aube (Harrisburg, Pa.). Aube will matriculate at Central Dauphin High School this year after wrestling in Minnesota for three years. During his four years as high school wrestler, Aube was a three-time captain and four-time all-conference selection. A state qualifier, Aube helped guide Central Dauphin to the 2008 Team State Championship this season and was a member of the Mid-Penn All-Star Team. He ended his high school career with nearly 200 victories. Aube was also a member of the Minnesota Freestyle and Greco Roman squads and was two-time team MVP. Aube projects at 149 or 157.

Drew Kelly, a three-time state wrestling champion, has been named wrestling coach at Ames High School.

The job requires approval of the Ames School Board at its May 19 meeting, according to Ames athletic director Judge Johnston.

Kelly, who wrestled at Charles City, has been an assistant coach at Fort Dodge for the last three seasons. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Waterloo Columbus.

In high school, Kelly had a 133-10 record, losing only one match in his final three seasons.

He replaces Chad Zmolek, who had the position for one season and who will remain at Ames at boys’ soccer coach.

Arizona State University drops Wrestling

In a stunning move described as “economic stress”, Arizona State University announced the immediate cancellation of Division 1 wrestling at the University. The amateur wrestling community quickly sprang into action, creating Save ASU Wrestling, a resource for information on how to save wrestling for the Sun Devils.

This major loss at one of the few Pac-10 schools that still participate in wrestling means Arizona natives will have much further to travel to compete at the division 1 level. It also unseats All-American Anthony Robles, his team mates, and all of their coaching staff.
